Third Party Viewer Approval

by on Sep.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

I finally got an email about the approval of Whisper today (~5 months after submitting). The email contained a list of actions I must take, including providing screenshots of various part of the program running under each intended target platform. Well, since Whisper is Java based, it runs on at least Windows, Linux and OS X… I just don’t have the time or motivation to do this.

My reply was simply “Too many hoops. Not bothering.”

I don’t see why I should have to jump through so many hoops just to please Linden Labs. If they had any interest in supporting third party viewers, they would at least use the viewer themselves to perform these tests. I also can’t take them seriously when it takes them this long to turn around the process.

To the best of my knowledge, Whisper adheres to the ridiculously restrictive guidelines imposed by Linden Lab. However, I’ll keep Whisper as an unofficial client until I’m forced to do otherwise.

Whisper Transport v2.0 and Whisper v1.3

by on May.09, 2010, under Uncategorized

Another pair of releases!

Whisper Transport has hit v2.0 thanks to Lib OpenMetaVerse 0.8.0 being released. This is just a maintenance release; no new features. Thankfully the Lib OMV guys are now using events properly (passing eventarg object rather than multiple arguments per event) – it took a while to rework my code, but now future upgrades shouldn’t be as painful.

Whisper v1.3 redraws images after they are loaded (sometimes you had to change tabs in a profile to get the image to show properly – oops!).

As always, you can grab the releases from here. You don’t need to upgrade both, but it’s definitely recommended! Source is available here.

Still Awaiting Approval

by on May.04, 2010, under Uncategorized

I submitted Whisper to the Viewer Directory back on the 24th of April and it’s still awaiting approval. It assigns the submission an ID, and it seems that other viewers submitted after mine have already been approved. Maybe this is a bad sign…

WhisperTransport v1.5 Released

by on May.01, 2010, under Uncategorized

This one’s a very minor, but useful release. Originally, I had intended the cache to be session based rather than login based. However, the latter makes more sense. So now, when you reconnect, you won’t have to redownload all of the cached images! This release also cleans up how the WhisperTransport settings files are stored.

Go grab it from here. Note that no client update is needed!

Softpedia Listing

by on Apr.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

This is a bit flattering news… Softpedia decided to download and test out Whisper – they were impressed enough to list it. All this without me even contacting them! Their email states “We are impressed with the quality of your product and encourage you to keep these high standards in the future.” They even certify that it is free of adware, viruses, trojans and backdoors.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

Whisper Released

by on Apr.24, 2010, under Uncategorized

As promised, I’ve rebranded and released “Whisper” and “WhisperTransport”.

You can grab the files from here. Note that you must upgrade both components in order to ensure proper functionality. Be sure to read the “Disclosure.txt” file for important privacy policy information and other functionality disclosures.

There are no new features in this release except for the rebranding and now you will be asked to accept the Second Life Terms of Service before you connect (and after each ToS update).

I’m now going to self-certify the viewer so that it won’t get blocked by Linden Lab.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. SlXSLChat has rebranded to “Whisper”. I’d like to say this is purely my choice, but the Third Party Viewer Policy released by Linden Labs is quite clear that no third party client may have “SL” in its name. Since this client is about being light weight, simple and understated, “Whisper” seemed like a fitting title.

I’ll have to make all new releases of the software fairly soon to be compliant – I think usage of SlXSLChat has already been blocked even though the policy doesn’t become enforced until the 30th of April.

Watch this space!

Whisper v1.1 Released

by on Apr.11, 2010, under Uncategorized

Hi guys!

There’s a new version of Whisper out. This is just a maintenance release, but fixes a fairly significant bug! The password hashing algorithm wasn’t working properly (it wasn’t padding single digit bytes into double digits when generating the MD5 hash, thus causing some passwords to become corrupt, which meant Second Life denied login). Other fixes are mostly cosmetic – see the README file included.

As ever, you can grab the latest version from here. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Whisper v1.0 Released

by on Jan.30, 2010, under Uncategorized

Hi all! As promised, I’m releasing the chat client now. It’s only been 30 days in the making (with most of the work having been done in the first 9 days), but it’s at a point now where I’m happy to release it. There is one known issue, but I think it comes down to a bug in LibOpenMetaVerse – sometimes when you log in, LibOpenMetaVerse reports to the client that a group chat has been joined successfully, when really it hasn’t. This causes the client to request the session members for a group chat, which then fails (you’ll get an error popup for each group in your group list). The only work-around for this at the moment is to log out and log back in.

That bug aside, I’ve been using the client all week and everything else seems fine. So go ahead and grab it from here. Remember, you’ll also need the WhisperTransport program (available from the same link) or you won’t be able to use the client!

There are README.txt files supplied with each release that explain how to use each application. As ever, if you are stuck, find any bugs, have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc… please feel free to email me! The email address is included in the README.txt file.

I hope you enjoy using the client!

WhisperTransport v1.3 Released

by on Jan.27, 2010, under Uncategorized

Another day, another release… I’ve removed the “tracked” nearby avatar code. LibOpenMetaVerse was often return erroneous coordinates for nearby avatars when using this supposedly more accurate method of tracking (I was often seeing coordinates close to {0, 0, 0} for avatar positions). Instead, WhisperTransport only uses coarse grid updates to track avatars. I’ve also allowed the nearby avatar position updates to be sent as frequently as every second, rather than immediately or between 5..60 seconds.

You can grab it from here.
